In this 5-day intensive lab class, students practice the same time-tested procedures and colored gemstone identification skills used by the GIA’s renowned gemological experts. This lab class will help you to develop the knowledge and skills you’ll need to complete the Gem Identification eLearning course if you are earning the GIA Graduate Colored Stones or Graduate Gemologist® diploma.

Learn to identify and separate natural gemstones from imitations and synthetics.

Diamonds

Become familiar with the tools and instruments gemologists use, including:

  • Microscope
  • Refractometer with polarizing filter and a removable magnifying eyepiece
  • Refractive index (RI) liquid
  • Polariscope with an optic figure sphere
  • Dichroscope
  • Prism spectroscope (table model)
  • Spectroscope (handheld)
  • Loupe

Along with this hands-on training, your instructors will carefully demonstrate key tests and coach you in quick, effective testing procedures. Students must pass an instrumentation exam to complete the class successfully.

You will receive a lab manual, a gem cloth, a pinpoint incandescent light source and a color grading card.

Note: starting January 1, 2020 completing this lab class will be a prerequisite to enrolling in the Gem Identification eLearning course.
